Raelec designed and developed the first ELA earth leakage relay for use in the first 600 kVA, 11kV/1000 underground substations it had designed in the previous year for BHP Collieries. Using integrated electronic circuits provided more reliable personal protection.

This product started moves into the protection relay market. In September 1973 Scientechnic was formed to design and manufacture mining electronic protection relays, primarily for coal mines.
